Hot ‘n’ Horny

About Hot ‘n’ Horny

The search “does weather affect sexual desire?” returns 1.4m results in Google. The top hits come in the form of various qualitative surveys of horny men, who confirm that they are, in fact, more virile in the summer.

But we live in the information age – and we can do better than small samples and self-reporting.

By scraping data from a London-focussed hookup website, Hot ‘n’ Horny accesses over 2,500 new casual sex advertisements every day, which can be studied for patterns in human (casual) sexual behaviour.

The end goal is to map the temperature against the number of adverts posted online, but until the year’s data is collected, analysis of Hot ‘n’ Horny can provide other interesting insights.

How Hot ‘n’ Horny was made

A PHP scraper checks different causal encounter adverts at a well-known hook-up website. At the end of each day it counts how many adverts of each category were posted. This is translated into a graph on the front-end for visitors to see.

Observations so far

  • Men are greater than woman Men seeking women post 50x more advertisements then women seeking men.
  • Gay ol’ weekend: Gay men approach casual hookups as a weekend activity, with a big hike in weekend advertising…
  • …whereas men seeking women spread their sex-ads more evenly over the week.
  • Manic Mondays: Straight men’s advertisements peak on Mondays (relaxation after a tough start to the week?)
  • Equality of the homo-sexes: The number of men seeking men is roughly level with the number of men seeking women. Equally, the number of women seeking women is level with the number of women seeking men. It seems that with 10% of the population being homosexual, they must be posting 10 times as prolifically to even-up the postings.
  • A harmony of transsexuality: The number of men seeking transexuals is roughly equal to the number of transexuals seeking men. It’s a marriage (or at least a consummation) made in heaven (or at least the cloud).
  • No Valentine’s Gay: The number of gay men looking for casual sex on Valentine’s Day was lower than on any other Saturday of the year.
  • Blue-Balls Wednesday: “Blue Monday” – the saddest day of the year – was only the second-least horny. The least was Wednesday, January 14th.
